Badalona Serveis Assistencials (Catalonia, Spain)
Badalona Serveis Assistencials (BSA) is a consortium that manages the Hospital Municipal de Badalona, the Homecare Integrated service, the Socio-sanitary Centre El Carme, 7 Primary Care Centres and the Centre for Sexual and Reproductive Health and provides care to a total population of 234.000 inhabitants in a very populated suburban area of Barcelona, BSA employs more than 1.200 people.
BSA has been implementing ICT in the provision of care at all levels, for the last 10 years. One of the most significant characteristics is the strategy based on the coordination of the different levels of care: from primary and home care to hospital care, all the interventions are well coordinated and globally supervised. This integrated model of care ensures the best service for the citizens when and where needed, optimising the user of the resources to guarantee the best overall care. The possibility of sharing the electronic health records among the different health care levels allows the development of new models of care to improve the access of patients to Secondary Care, without generating duplications or delays in lab tests or other diagnostic procedures. This allows specialists to consult patients both at their home and in the Primary Care Centres.
Services for elderly people
BSA is constantly aiming to improve the services offered to the population that it looks after, and in the last five years the complexity of the problem has greatly increased, especially in the social health area. The geriatrics, psycho geriatrics, neuropsychiatry, convalescence, rehabilitation and palliative care specialities are currently being complemented by several programs that have been put in place in order to improve the services rendered.
The provision of better services in elderly care is one of the most challenging issues that BSA is currently facing, partly due to the area’s peculiar social structure, which is greatly influenced by a large immigration flow. The infrastructures and facilities have been under constant modernisation in order to deal with the specific features that the healthcare delivery for the elders presents. The adoption of new organizational models and of state-of-the art technologies has allowed BSA to answer to the citizen’s needs with flexibility and efficiency.
BSA supports the UN World Pact and has been recognised with the status of Social Accountability International SA 8000:2008 certified organisation.
MasterMind services
The four Spanish organisations participating in MasterMind agreed to adapt existing evidence-based cCBT programs to their local cultural context. For this purpose, a group of healthcare professionals (psychiatrists and psychologists) from these regions with expertise in CBT interventions and on-line therapies directed to other pathologies, have worked together to define the clinical content of the cCBT programme to be implemented. As there is no experience with cCBT, the four organisations had to use a stepped approach starting within a Mental Health Care Unit and since spreading to GPs.
A platform recently developed through a joint venture with Arvato-Bertelsmann is used to deploy the cCBT service. The platform has now been integrated within BSA information systems.
The communication channels can be: internal messaging system, SMS and email.
The adapted cCBT programme, a web application developed in HTML5, is called “Supera tu depresión” (Get over your depression) and consists of eight modules.
